Balancing conservation & sustainable development
Human and ecological systems are intertwined and interdependent. More than ever, ecological science can meet humanitarian goals, if ecologists are willing to engage outside of academia and in interdisciplinary science. My recent work has focused on the ecological, social, and economic science of marine protected areas and fisheries management reforms. But for ecologists need to not only be willing to engage outside of academia, their outreach must be facilitated and explicitly supported by their universities and peers. To that end, I am part of an ongoing working group working toward culture change that supports academic engagement.
